In celebration of World Oceans Day, whose 2023 theme was “Planet Ocean: tides are changing“, Selenis once again partnered with the Sol Pacífico Foundation for a beach clean-up this summer, at Playa Chica in the coastal town of Arroyo Seco, Jalisco, Mexico. The event was a success, drawing enthusiastic participation from both the local community and volunteers alike.
Twenty-seven children from Arroyo Seco School led the charge, armed with gloves, bags, and a strong sense of responsibility for their environment. The young participants, accompanied by nine adults, combed the 600-meter stretch of Playa Chica. With each step, they picked up litter that had washed ashore, determined to make a difference in their coastal ecosystem.
In addition to the enthusiastic volunteers from the community and the school, there were twelve volunteers who selflessly offered their time and effort to support the cause. Their presence was invaluable in ensuring the event ran smoothly. The beach clean-up was not only a means to remove harmful waste from the beach, but also an educational opportunity.
The children learned about the various types of waste and the importance of recycling. After collecting the garbage, they sorted it into five corresponding containers: plastic, glass, cardboard, aluminum, and non-recyclable inorganic waste. This experience left a lasting impression on their young minds, teaching a sense of pride and responsibility for their actions.
Selenis also arranged a special treat for the children from the local community. As a reward for their hard work and dedication, the children who participated in the beach clean-up were participated in a sponsored surf lesson.
In the end, the collective efforts of the participants produced remarkable results. An amazing 417 kilograms of garbage was collected from Playa Chica, making the beach cleaner and safer for both marine life and visitors.
The success of this initiative has inspired Selenis, the Sol Pacífico Foundation, and the local community to continue working together, ensuring that every day becomes World Oceans Day.
